Critical infrastructure is defined as the backbone of a nation’s economy, security and health.

A nation’s well-being depends on securing and maintaining resilience across this infrastructure. Critical infrastructure should not only withstand changing conditions, but must also be able to adapt and recover rapidly from disruptions. Resilience includes the ability to withstand and recover from deliberate attacks, accidents or naturally occurring threats or incidents.

Critical infrastructure monitoring is greatly enhanced if there is local, sector and national level monitoring. Cyberattacks are becoming cheaper to execute with almost similar consequences as a physical attack without the need for the logistical overhead.

Almost all nations have announced plans to set up cyber capabilities and many terrorist organizations are expected to have advanced cyberattack capabilities in few years. Many such attacks have already been affected but expert view such attacks as tests for a larger attack to come.
